Bio: BRILES, James E. Born March 31, 1926, in Prescott. Educated in public school at Prescott. Married Lorene Tendall. Three sons, two daughters. Member: United Methodist Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Served in World War II in Asiatic-Pacific theater. In auction and real estate business in Adams County, 36 years. Eight years in the House, 18 years in Senate. Fifth term.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday (today), July 16; at the United Methodist Church In Corning with burial at the Cromwell Cemetery. Coen-Beaty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements; Mr. Briles was the son of Edward L. and Doris Simpson Briles and he was born March 31, 1926, in Prescott. He graduated from Prescott High School and entered the U.S. Army, serving two years during WWII as a combat Infantryman In the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He received four bronze stars and other merits. He was a member of The VFW and the American Legion Ourcq Post 117. Mr. Briles moved to Corning in 1949 and worked in real estate for 30 years and as an auctioneer for 33 years. He became interested in politics and served southwest Iowa as a member of the House of Representatives for eight years. In 1965 he was elected to the Iowa Senate where he served until his retirement in 1984. He was one of the best senators at introducing his bills early in the session to make sure they would be debated. He was remembered for his chairmanship of the County Government Committee. He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Corning; three daughters. Dory Briles of Des Moines, Mary Briles of Corning, and Coleen Schieffer of Caladonia, Minn.; five sons; Dr. Ed Briles of Buhl, Idaho, Dr. Jim Briles of Terra Ceia, Fla.. Dr. Tom Briles of Kansas City, Mo., Rick Jessen of Corning, and Gary Jessen of Nodaway: a brother, Harvey Briles of Creston; and nine Grandchildren. Officiating will be the Rev. Richard Layman of Coming and the Rev. Jeanne Groom of Prescott. Pallbearers will be Duane Birt, Joe Jones, Francis Mack, Robert Bell, Dr. G.R, McAlpin. Horace Daggett and Jack Nystrom. Honorary pallbearers are Gene Kennedy, Jim Gallegher. Rusty Laird, Junior Antisdel, Charles Wasker, Kevin Kelley,Wes Smith, Ginger Smith, Charles Jones. Mary Wilcox and Ed Campbell.
