Notes

Olin F. Perkins

The list of attendees at the August 4, 1974 Briles Family Reunion at the Legion Hall in Italy, Texas, spells his first name as "Olan" and lists the three children for Pearl and Olin included below.

The Social Security Death Index gives his middle initial as "F," says his SS Card # was 464-12-4059, and says that his card was issued in Texas.

Pearl Briles

She is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her grandparents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the daughter of Oliver Briles. Her mother, Maud Snow Briles, is holding her, and she appears to be about a year old, so should would probably have been born in 1908 or 1909.

The Social Security Death Index gives her SS Card was issued in Texas.

Raymond Luther Seals

The children and grandchildren of Luther Seale and Minnie Briles Seale listed below come from a list of attendees of the August 4, 1974 Briles Reunion held at the Legion Hall in Italy, Texas. It is unclear from the list if all of the children and grandchildren were actually at the reunion or if the list is just there for completeness.

The list indicated that Minnie and Luther were living in Abilene, Texas, at the time of the reunion.

Minnie Briles

She is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her grandparents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the daughter of Oliver Briles. Thus, we know that she was alive in 1909. She appears to be about 7 or 8 in the photo.

James Otis Briles Sr.

He is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside his grandparents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the daughter of Oliver Briles. Thus, we know that he was alive in 1909. He appears to be about 5 or 6 in the photo.

In a letter from Winona Briles Brown (daughter of Otis's Uncle Wilbur) to Sara Briles Moriarty dated July 20, 1982, Winona reports that Otis was at a Briles Family Reunion that took place in Italy, Texas, earlier that month, so he was still alive as of that date. Indeed, she says that he was 82 years old and the oldest person at the reunion. If Otis was really 82 in 1982, he would have been born in 1900.

In a letter from Winona to Sara dated Decmeber 1983, Winona says that, as of that date, Otis was still alive and living in the "country out of Milford [Texas]."

Bertha Josephine Huffstutler

Family sources say that she either lived in Milford, Texas, at the time or her marriage to Otis or she was born there.

Mallie Briles

Her name is either "Mollie" or "Mallie." The Social Security Death Index gives her name as "Mallie," so that is the spelling used in these files. Her SS Card # was 450-42-4012; it was issued in Texas.

She is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her grandparents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the daughter of Ciscero Briles. Thus, we know that she was alive in 1909. She appears to be about 3 or 4 when the photo was taken.

In a letter from Winona Briles Brown (daughter of Mallie's Uncle Wilbur) to Sara Briles Moriarty dated July 20, 1982, Winona reports that Mallie was at a Briles Family Reunion that took place in Italy, Texas, earlier that month, so she was still alive as of that date.

Marie Briles

She is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her grandparents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the daughter of "Ciscero" Briles. Thus, we know that she was alive in 1909. She appears to have been about 6 or 7 when the photo was taken.

The 1910 Census for Ellis County gives her age as 8 (yielding a birth year of 1902) and says she was born in Texas. See the Notes for her father CISCER0 HARRISON BRILES for details on the 1910 Census.

Her first cousin, Loraine Briles, also married a Tenery. (Loraine was the daughter of Marie's Uncle Wilber Briles.) Marie was born in 1900 or 1902 (depending upon the source), and Loraine was born in 1913, so the two cousins could have married two brothers. As of October 2005, we do not know if the two Tenerys were brothers or related in any way, although it seems that they were probably related.

In a letter from Winona Briles Brown (daughter of Marie's Uncle Wilbur) to Sara Briles Moriarty dated July 20, 1982, Winona reports that Marie was at a Briles Family Reunion that took place in Italy, Texas, earlier that month, so she was still alive as of that date. In that letter, Winona also reports that Marie's married last name was Bracher, so she may have been married more than once. In addition, in the same letter, Winona says that Marie was one of the oldest people at the reunion and that she was going to be 83 in August 1900, both of which agree with the birth year given above. This allows us to provide a birth month for Marie of August!

In a letter from Winona to Sara dated December 1983, Winona says that, as of that date, Mary Briles Bratcher (note different spelling than in Winona's July 20, 1982 letter cited immediately above) was still alive and living in Italy.

The list of attendees at the August 4, 1974 Briles Family Reunion at the Legion Hall in Italy, Texas, includes Marie, gives her last name as "Bratcher," and says that she was living in Italy, Texas.

The 1930 Census for Ellis County gives her age as 24, yielding a birth year of 1906. At this point, she was the wife of E. F. Bratcher. He states that he was 20 when he was first married and she was 21. Thus, Marie was 21 when she married her first husband, Unknown Tenery, yielding a marriage year of 1927. E. F. was first married in 1917. Thus, he obviously also had a spouse before Marie. For details on the 1930 Census entries for the household of E. F. Bratcher, see his Notes.
