In the 1860 Census for Randolph Co., NC, places Jasper as the last entry in the household for Jacob Briles, Jr., the first cousin of Jasper's father, Daniel Eli Briles II. (See "Notes" for Jacob Briles, Jr.) This brings out the possibility that Jasper is the son of Jacob and his wife Rachael rather than the child of Dan and Emily. In an email dated August 31, 2006, R. Trent Briles points out that John Broyles, one of the Broyles/Briles family genealogists, notes after the entry for Jasper in his listing for this census record: "of Dan Jr. [Daniel Eli Briles II] Wetnurse?" Note that Jacob Jr's daughter Sarah is younger than Jasper (9/12 yielding a birth month of October 1859 compared with Jasper's age of 1 since the census was taken on July 10, 1860). She would thus have been conceived in about Feb. 1859. Jasper was born in Sept. 1858. However, despite the fact that Sarah is YOUNGER than Jasper, she is listed BEFORE Jasper in the census. My experience with census records has been that folks who are NOT the direct descendants of the head of household are listed in the census records AFTER the direct descendants.
Thus, my conclusion is that Jasper is indeed the son of Daniel Eli Briles II and Emily Nancy Sawyer Briles and that he was sent to Rachael Foust Briles to serve as his wetnurse after she had Sarah in October 1849. Could be that Emily "dried up" before they really wanted to wean Jasper. In all of my family stories, there was absolutely no indication that Jasper was anything other than the son of Dan II and Emily!! Notice the family history I inherited said that Jasper's first wife was a first cousin named Hattie who was the child of one of his mother's siblings and, sure enough, census records showed that Emily's brother George W. had a daughter Hattie who was exactly the right age!
According to a note that Susan Marie Briles Kniebes received from her Uncle Connally Oran Briles (and Jasper's nephew) on October 22, 2002, Jasper was the oldest of the children of Daniel Eli Briles, Sr., and his wife Emily Nancy Sawyer. However, the oldest child may have been his sister Betty. (See "Notes" for Betty Briles" for details.)
The 1870 Randolph Co., N.C., Census lists Jasper as living with his parents Daniel Eli Briles II and Emily Nancy Sawyer Briles and gives his age as 11.
See "Notes" for Enoch Elwood Briles for the part that Elwood and Jasper played in how their family found the land they homesteaded north of Italy, Texas.
According to Leona Hays Connally Briles (the wife of the only son of Jasper's brother Enoch Elwood Briles), Jasper's first wife, Hattie Sawyer was a niece of Emily Nancy Sawyer (Jasper's mother) and was thus Jasper's first cousin. [Confirmed 8/2/2006: See Notes for Hattie Sawyer.] Once Jasper and his family moved to Ellis County, Texas, Jasper went back to North Carolina to get Hattie, whom he brought to live with his mother, for he was a lot older than Hattie. Before Jasper married Hattie, he sent her to school in Italy, Texas. Leona said that an older teacher in Italy once told her that Hattie was the smartest student ever to attend Italy schools.
Jasper and Hattie had two sons after they were married in Texas. According to a letter from Clara Ruth Wilson Briles to her daughter Sara Briles Moriarty dated September 1, 1980, during a conversation with Leona (who was living with them at the time), Roy was born in Aliea, Texas, which is now known as Shark's Town. Roy and his parents later moved to Sayre, Oklahoma, where Hattie and the younger son, Marvin, died in a flood in western Oklahoma. Jasper and his older son, Roy, then moved to Skiatook, Oklahoma. For Leona's input on Roy, see the Notes under Roy Mitchell Briles.
Also according to Leona Hays Connally Briles, Jasper build one of the first business buildings in Itasca, Texas. He also built two building in Italy, Texas. Leona says his name was still on those buildings the last time she was there. Jasper then was in business around Conroe and Houston, Texas. It was AFTER these business ventures that he, Hattie, and their sons moved to Oklahoma.
In the letter from Ruth to Sara referenced above, Ruth provides the following story [quoting Leona] about the flood that killed Jasper's first wife Hattie Sawyer and his younger son:
"In Sayre, Oklahoma, Jasper built a house on a bluff on his farm. When Roy was about 5 to 7 years old (1902-1904), a flood swept the house, his mother, his father, and him [and his younger brother] away. His father caught him and held him in a tree all night, but his mother Hattie and his 2-year-old brother, Marvin, perished. Jasper had the house put back in place and repaired it, and he and Roy lived there until Roy was grown. Then they moved to Skiatook. When Roy was about 12, Jasper married Sarah Miller." [Roy was actually 9 years old when his father married Sarah E. Miller. See Marriage Notes for Jasper and Sarah.]
Note that the family stories persist in calling Jasper and Hattie's second son "Marvin," but the 1900 U.S. Census and other records show a son named "Willie W. Briles." We have concluded that Jasper and Hattie probably had three sons: Roy, who lived to adulthood; Willie W., who must have died before the Sayre, Oklahoma, flood described above; and Marvin Sawyer, who was born after June 1900 and died in 1902-1904 during the Sayre, Oklahoma, flood described above.
Worthie Elwood Briles, Leona's son, adds the following to the flood story: The flood occurred when a dam broke. Jasper and Roy were finally rescued by a Native American. Hattie and Marvin perished when the tree in which they had taken refuge was swept away by the flood.
Following Hattie's death, Jasper married another cousin, Sarah E. Miller, who was the daughter of Elizabeth Sawyer, who was a sister of Jasper's mother, Emily Nancy Sawyer. Sarah's father was James Miller. For information on Sarah E. Miller, see the "Notes" for her entry in these Family Tree Maker files.
Leona Hays Connally Briles also reported that, when Jasper and Sarah were older, a man named Paul Sawyer lived with them. She assumes that he was probably one of their cousins, but did not know for sure.
1900 U.S. Census for Ellis County, Texas (Series T623, Roll 1630, page 247) taken on June 20, 1900:
Jasper Briles: Age 41, Born September 1858, White, Male, Head of Household, Married 4 years, Born in NC, Father and Mother born in NC, occupation=[unreadable word] engineer.
Hattie [looks like "Hattes" but we know it was Hattie] Briles: Wife of Jasper, White, Female, Born in June 1879, Married 4 years, Had 2 children both of whom were still living when census was taken, Born in NC, Both parents born in NC.
Roy M. Briles: Son of Jasper, Born in June 1897, White, Male, Born in Texas, Both parents born in NC.
Willie W. Briles: Son of Jasper, Born in December 1899, 6 months old as of June 1900, Born in Texas, Both parents born in NC.Jasper is NOT in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside his parents' home in Italy, Texas, but his 12-year-old son Roy M. Briles IS in the photo. Jasper didn't die until 1933, so he was definitely alive when the photo was taken. He was probably at his home in Oklahoma at the time.
1910 U.S. Census for Harrison Township, Kiowa County, Oklahoma (Series T624, Roll 1257, Page 167) taken on May 3, 1910:
James Briles [really Jasper Briles, error by census taker]: Head of Household, White, Male, Age 51, Second Marriage, Married 3 years, Born in NC, Both parents born in NC, Occupation = Farmer.
Sarah E. Briles: Wife of Jasper, White, Female, Age 34 (= born about 1876), Second Marriage, Married 3 years, Mother of 1 child who was still living in May 1910, Born in NC, Both parents born in NC.
Arley Briles [his last name was really Miller, his mother's last name]: Son [really step son] of Jasper, Age 11, Born in NC, Both parents born in NC.
Bradley Miller: Brother-in-law of Jasper [Thus, Sarah E. Miller Briles's brother], White, Male, Age 31, Born in NC, Both parents born in NC, Occupation = Laborer.1920 U.S. Census for Skiatook Township, Tulsa County, Oklahoma (Series T625, Roll 1485, Page 230) taken on February 6, 1920:
Jasper Briles: Head of household, White, Male, Age 61, Married, Born in NC as were both of his parents, Occupation = Farmer.
Sarah E. Briles: Wife of Jasper Briles, White, Female, Age 4?, Married, Born in NC as were both of her parents.
Roy Briles: Son of Jasper Briles, White, Male, Age 22, Born in Texas, Both parents born in NC, Occupation = Bookkeeper for an oil company. [Roy was the son of Jasper and his first wife, Hattie Sawyer.]
Arley Miller: Step-son of Jasper Briles: White, Male, Age 21, Born in NC as were both of his parents, Occupation = Repair mechanic for an oil company. [Arley was the son of Sarah and used her maiden name as his last name.]
She was the daughter of Elizabeth Sawyer, one of the sisters of Jasper's mother who had married James Miller. (This means that when Jasper married Sarah E. Miller, he married his first cousin for the second time.) Because her son Arley has the last name of Miller, our original assumption was that Sarah was either married to someone who had also had the last name of Miller before she married Jasper or Arley was born out of wedlock and took his mother's maiden name. If Sara was married to a Mr. Miller, we don't know his first name or whether he died or they divorced.
Her middle initial of "E" (which probably stood for "Elizabeth," her mother's first name) comes from the 1910 Census (immediately below) and the 1910 Census of Harrison Township, Kiowa County, Oklahoma.
In the 1900 Randolph County, NC, Census, Sarah E. Douthit [Miller] and her son William J. Douthit are enumerated with Sarah's mother Elizabeth [Sawyer] Miller. Details of this census say that Sarah had been married for 3 years as of June 5, 1900, and that she had 1 child, who was still living. Since her son William J. Douthit was born in June 1898, this seems to indicate that she had married Mr. Douthit in 1897 and that both Mr. Douthit and William were still alive in 1900 but Sarah wasn't living with Mr. Douthit.
NOTE: Both of Sarah's sons, William J. Douthit and Arley Miller, are supposed to have been born in June 1898!!!! Consequently, they must be the SAME person!! Suggestion: Sarah and Mr. Douthit had a child out of wedlock. Either the child's name on his birth certificate or just his original name was William J. Douthit (as per 1900 U.S. Census; See Notes for Elizabeth Sawyer). Sarah probably called him "Arley" as a nickname. Some time after the 1900 Census, she must have started just referring to him as "Arley Miller," which remained his name for the rest of his life. (See also the Notes for Arley Miller.)
Jasper's brother Enoch Elwood Briles was living with Sarah and Jasper when Jasper died in 1933. According to Enoch Elwood's obituary, he continued to live with Sarah after Jasper died. Since she was Enoch Elwood's first cousin, they would have know each other since they were children.
See Notes of Jasper Briles for additional information.
In 1940 she attended the funeral of her uncle, Enoch Elwood Briles, in Skiatook, Oklahoma.
The list of attendees at the August 4, 1974 Briles Reunion at the Legion Hall in Italy, Texas, lists both Winona and her husband Frank as attendees and states that they did not have any children. It also gives their address as Garland, Texas.
In July 20, 1982, she wrote a letter to Sara Briles Moriarty reporting on the Briles Family Reunion that took place in Italy, Texas, earlier that month. Thus, she was still alive in July 1982. She also says in that letter that she was 72 years old when the reunion took place, which, depending upon the month of her birth, agrees with the birth year given for her above.
For her touching description of her relationship with her Uncle Enoch Elwood Briles, who was also Sara's great grandfather, see the Notes for Enoch Elwood Briles.
In a letter from Winona to Sara dated Decmeber 1983, Winona says that, as of that date, her husband was still living. She also says that she was going to be 74 on December 27, 1983, which yields her birth date: December 27, 1909!
The Social Security Death Index agrees that Winona was born on December 27, 1909. Her SS Card # was 454-38-6792; it was issued in Texas.
In her Genealogy of Johannes (Hans) Breul that she sent Susan Briles Kniebes in September 2001, Deborah Penny spells Ciscero's first name as "Ciscero." Much of the information that Susan had prior to and following receiving Deborah's information spelled his first name as "Cicero." The caption that Deborah provided for the photo of the "Children and Grandchildren of Dan and Nancy Emily Briles, Italy, Texas, Year 1909" spelled his first name as "Ciscro." The 1900 U.S. Census for Ellis County, Texas, definitely spells his first name as "Cicero." However, a visit by Duane and Susan (Briles) Kniebes to the Italy Cemetery in Italy, Ellis County, Texas, showed that his name was spelled as "Ciscero H. Briles" on the headstone that he shares with his wife Lela Mabel. Thus, his first names is spelled as "Ciscero" in these files except when quoting other sources that spell it differently.
Deborah also gives his birth date as March 1876, but the 1900 Census gives it as March 1878, which is the birth date used in these files for Ciscero. The 1880 Randolph Co., N.C., Census lists him as living with his parents and says that he was 2, which would also yield a birth year of 1878 rather than 1876. The 1900 Ellis County, Texas, Census shows him as living in Italy, Texas. However, his headstone gives his birth year at 1876. Nonetheless, since his entry in the 1900 Census below specifically says he was born in March 1878, that's the birth date used in these files.
1900 U.S. Census for Ellis County, Texas (Series T623, Roll 1630, page 249):
Cicero H. Briles: Age 22, Born March 1878, White, Male, Head of Household, Married 1 year, Born in NC, Father and Mother born in NC, occupation=farmer.
Lela May Briles: Cicero's wife, Age 18, Born in Jan. 1882 (hard to read the month), White, Female, Married 1 year, 0 children, Born in Texas, Parents born in Mississippi.1910 U.S. Census for Ellis County, Texas, 8th Judicial Precinct (Series T624, Roll 1549, Page 274) taken on April 5, 1910:
Cicero H. Briles: Head of Household, White, Male, Age 33, Married 10 years, Born in NC, Parents born in NC, Occupation = Farmer.
??? M. [Lela May] Briles, Wife of Cicero, White, Female, Age 26, Married 10 years, Mother of 5 children 4 of whom were still living in April 1910, Born in Texas, Parents born in Mississippi.
Robert J. Briles: Son of Cicero, White, Male, Age 2, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Curtis [Probably Conrad] Briles: Son of Cicero, White, Male, 8 months old (= born in Sept. 1909), Born in Texas, Father Born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Marie Briles: Daughter of Cicero, White, Female, Age 8, Born in Texas, Father Born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Mattie Mazelle or Mazrlle or Masrlee [probably Mazelle] Briles: Daughter of Cicero, White, Female, Age 4, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Mallie J. Scarborough: Mother-in-law of Cicero, White, Female, Age 62, Widowed, Married 30 years, Born in Texas, as were both of her parents. [This disagrees with the birth location of the mother of Cicero's wife, which is given as Mississippi in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses. See also the listing for Mallie Scarborough in the 1920 Census below.]Note that Lela May reports in the 1910 Census that she had had 5 children as of April 5, 1910 and that only 4 of them were still alive. The 1910 Census lists Robert, Conrad/Curtis, Marie, and Mattie. What about Mallie Mazelle, unless she died before 1910? And then there's the following headstone in the Italy Cemetery, Italy, Ellis County, Texas:
Herburt Briles
April 29, 1905
Nov. 25, 1905The OneWorld Tree at ancestry.com says that Herburt was the son of Ciscero and Lela May Briles. However, if the Social Security Death Index is correct in giving August 25, 1905 as the birth date of Mallie Briles, it would not be possible for Herburt to be a son of Ciscero and Lela May.
In May 2007, Anita Prewitt, a genealogy research in Ellis County, Texas, tried to solve this puzzle. All she found was yet another Baby Briles for whom the parents are not know:
Ellis County "Register of Deaths," Book 1, page 124, #1238, Baby Briles, died on Dec. 2, 1905, white, male, died near Italy, Texas, when he was about 7 months old. Oh well!
The Briles genealogy information provided by Jack E. Briles, Sr., of New Albany, Indiana, in February 2002 spelled his first name as "Cicero" and provided the middle initial of "H."
The list of attendees at the August 4, 1974 Briles Reunion in Italy, Texas, spells his first name as "Ciscro" and gives his middle name as "Harris."
He inherited his mother's brown eyes. Leona Hays Connally Briles, the wife of Ciscero's nephew, Worthie Harwood Briles, commented on his brown eyes and his small size.
His great grandnephew David Elwood Briles (great grandson of Cicsero's brother Enoch Elwood) looks a lot like him!
She is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her husband's grandparents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the wife of Ciscero Briles. Thus, we know that she was alive in 1909. Jack E. Briles, Sr., provided the spelling of her first name as "Lila" in Feb. 2002.
Deborah gives her birth date as January 1883. However, other sources (Mormon Genealogy Library in Salt Lake City) show that his wife as a Lea May who was born in January 1882 and the 1900 U.S. Census for Ellis County, Texas, specifically gives her birth date as January 1882, so that is the birth date used for Lela in these files even though the headstone that she shares with her husband Ciscero H. Briles gives her birth year as 1883.
1920 U.S. Census for the 8th Justice Precinct of Ellis County, Texas (Series T625, Roll 1800, Page 258) provides the following information:
Lela Briles: Head of Household, White, Female, Age 36, Widow, Born in Texas, Parents both born in Mississippi, Occupation = Farmer.
Mallie [could be Mollie] Briles: Daughter of Lela Briles, White, Female, Age 14, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Robert Briles: Son of Lela Briles, White, Male, Age 12, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Pat H. Briles: Son of Lela Briles, White, Male Age 6 [twin of Mattie E. Briles], Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Mattie E. Briles: Daughter of Lela Briles, White, Female, Age 6 [twin of Pat H. Briles], Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Mary Lou Briles: Daughter of Lela Briles, White, Female, Age 4-2/12, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Cleo Briles: Daughter of Lela Briles, White, Female, Age 11/12, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Mallie [could be Mollie] Scarborough: Mother of Lela Briles, White, Female, Age 72, Widow, Born in Mississippi, Father both in NC, Mother born in Texas.
The 1910 Ellis County, Texas, Census (see Notes for Cicero H. Briles for details) says that this Mattie has M. as a middle initial and was 4 when the census was taken on April 5, 1910. She probably died before the "second" Mattie was born in 1913, which is why the second 1913 daughter was also named Mattie.
The 1910 U.S. Census for 8th Judicial Precinct in Ellis County, Texas, lists a Curtis Briles, who could be Conrad or could be a different son who died young. Curtis was listed as being 8 months old on April 5, 1910, the date that the census was taken.
Elwood died as an infant.
He is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside his parents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the son of Daniel Eli Briles, Sr. Thus, we know that he was alive in 1909. This caption spells his first name as "Wilber" rather than "Wilbur."
His great grandnephew David Elwood Briles (great grandson of Wilbur's brother Enoch Elwood) looks a lot like him!
His first name is sometimes given as "Wilbur" and sometimes as "Wilber."
His two daughters attended the funeral of Worthy Harwood Briles, the son of Wilbur's brother Enoch Elwood Briles, in July 1979.
The 1910 U.S. Census of the 8th Judical Precinct of Ellis County, Texas (Series T624, Roll 1549, Page 274) lists WilbEr T. Briles and his family immediately after the entry for his mother Emily Briles [Note that this particular census taker was not very careful! A number of mistakes are know in the data below, all of which are noted. Thus, one does not know whether the other data is correct.] The census was taken on April 5, 1910:
Wilbert [should be Wilbur] Briles, Head of household, white, male 26 years old, married 1 year, born in Texas, parents born in NC, occupation=farmer.
Maggie Briles, wife of Wilber, white, female, 24 years old, married 1 year, mother of 1 child who was still living as of the date of the census.
Winona Briles, son of Wilber [was a DAUGHTER, not a son], white, male [was a FEMALE, not a male], age 1/12 year [should be 4/12 year (or 4 month), for she was born in December 1909 and the 1910 Census was taken in April 1910.]
A visit to the Milford Cemetery, Milford, Ellis Co., TX, on April 26, 2007, confirmed the birth and death dates for Wilbur Briles provided above. His headstone gives his first name as "Wiber," so that's the name used in these files.
Margaret Cornelia (Polly or Maggie) Parker
She is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her husband's grandparents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the wife of Wilbur/er Talmadge Briles. Thus, we know that she was alive in 1909.
Another family source says she died in Italy, Texas, in 1920.

Barbara (Bobbie) Isabelle Green
The list of attendees at the August 4, 1974 Briles Family Reunion at the Legion Hall in Italy, Texas, includes Bobbie, says she was the wife of Wilbur T. Briles, gives her current last name as "Gifford" (which indicates that she must have remarried after Wilbur T.'s death in 1951), and says that she was accompanied at the reunion by her daughter Willie Maude (Briles) McCoy and Willie's children Vicki, Rick, and Larry.
Her middle name of Isabelle comes from her headstone (which she shares with her husband Wilbur Talmadge Briles) in Milford Cemetery, Milford, Texas.
Oliver ("Ol" & "Ollie") Perry Briles
One of his father's descendants gives Oliver's birth date as 1865.He is listed as living with his parents in the 1880 Randolph County, N.C., Census and as being 11 at that time, which yields 1869 as his birth year.
He is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside his parents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the son of Daniel Eli Briles, Sr. Thus, we know that he was alive in 1909.
A possible additional child is the Perry Briles who is buried in the Italy Cemetery, Italy, Ellis County, Texas. Perry was born in February 1913 and died on July 20, 1913. Since he died so young, he may never have been included in lists of the family's children.
Leona Hays Connally Briles, the wife of the son of Oliver's brother Enoch Elwood Briles, recalled that Oliver had a red moustache and raised his family in Italy, Texas, which increases the possibility that the Perry Briles buried in the Italy Cemetery was one of his children.
See the information in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses below, which indicate that Oliver and his wife Maude had three children who died before 1900. We do not, at this point, know who these children were.
1900 U.S. Census for Italy, Ellis County, Texas (Series T623, Roll 1630, Page 239):
Oliver Briles: Head of Household, White, Male, Born February 1869, Age 31, Married 9 years, Born in NC, Both parents born in NC, Occupation = Farm Laborer.

Mary Briles: Daughter of Oliver, White, Female, Born October 1896, Age 4, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Minnie Briles: Daughter of Oliver, White, Female, Born October 1897, Age 2, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.1910 U.S. Census for 2nd Justice Precinct of Grayson County, Texas, taken on April 23, 1910:

[Note that the 1900 Census cited above reports that both of her parents were born in Texas but that the 1920 Census cited belows agrees with the 1910 Census that her father was born in Tennessee.]
George Briles: Son of Oliver P. Briles, White, Male, Age 17, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Mary Briles: Daughter of Oliver P. Briles, White, Female, Age 14, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.

Pearl Briles: Daughter of Oliver P. Briles, White, Female, Age 13, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Lenora [should be Elnora] Briles: Daughter of Oliver P. Briles, White, Female, Age 8, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Walter Briles: Son of Oliver P. Briles, White, Male, Age 6, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
She is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her husband's parents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the wife of Oliver Briles. Thus, we know that she was alive in 1909.
In the 1910 Census for the Second Judicial Precinct of Grayson County, Texas, immediately below the information for the family of Oliver P. Briles and his wife Maude (details provided in the Notes for Oliver P. Briles) is the listing for a William M. Snow, Age 36. He was born in Texas, his father was born in Tennessee, and his mother was born in Texas. Since Maude's maiden name was also Snow and since her parents were born in the same locations as William's, Maude and William were probably sister and brother.
1 NAME Mary /Briles/
She is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her grandparents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the daughter of Oliver Briles. Thus, we know that she was alive in 1909.The list of attendees at the August 4, 1974 Briles Family Reunion at the Legion Hall in Italy, Texas, lists the children and grandchildren for Mary and Joe provided below. It does not specifically say that Mary and Joe were at the reunion, but they probably were.
The Social Security Death Index lists a Mary E. Murray, who is probably the same person. The problem is that the SSDI says that Mary E. Murray was born on May 25, 1909, which does NOT agree with the birth information for Mary Briles, the daughter of Oliver P. and Maude Briles, in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses for her father's family. (The family's information from both of these censuses is provided under the Notes for her father, Oliver P. Briles.) The entry for Mary E. Murray given in the Social Security Death Index gives her SS Card # as 449-24-5436, says that it was issued in Texas, and says that she died on Aug. 5, 1997, in Whitney, Hill County, Texas.

She is NOT in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her parents' home in Italy, Texas.
We have assume that this is the Mattie Briles who married a D. D. Harris in Ellis County, Texas, on March 5, 1893. Other family history agrees that she married a Dave Harris.
The 1880 U.S. Census for Randolph, N.C., lists a Martha G. or C., who was 8 years old at the time, which yields a birth year of about 1872.
Nancy and Mattie can't both be born in 1867 (which some family history indicates to be the case) unless they are twins, and there is no indication that they were. If Mattie and Martha G. or C. of the 1880 Census are the same person, than Mattie's birth year is 1872. Have changed Mattie's birth year to 1872 accordingly.
Susan (or Sue) is in NOT the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her parents' home in Italy, Texas.
Two family sources say that she married a Dempse Arnold and that the couple did not have any children. She (and her husband?) is said to have moved back to North Carolina in about 1896, where she died, which probably explains her being missing from the 1909 photo.
Why isn't she with the rest of her family in the 1870 Census for Randolph County, N.C.? Maybe she was visiting a relative at the time? Since she wasn't with the family in the 1880 Census for Randolph County either, one wonders if she really is part of this family after all! However, there is space for her in the family birth order!
Her first cousin, Marie Briles, also married a Tenery. (Marie was the daughter of Loraine's Uncle Cicero Briles.) Marie was born in 1900, and Loraine was born in 1913, so the two cousins could have married two brothers. As of October 2005, we do not know if the two Tenerys were brothers or related in any way, although it seems that they probably were related.
In a letter from Winona Briles Brown (Loraine's sister) to Sara Briles Moriarty dated July 20, 1982, Winona reports that Loraine was at a Briles Family Reunion that took place in Italy, Texas, earlier that month, so she was still alive as of that date.
In a letter from Winona to Sara dated Decmeber 1983, Winona says that, as of that date, Loraine and her family were living in Plainview, Texas.
The Social Security Death Index gives her SS Card # as 455-48-5729 and says it was issued in Texas.
