The Briles Information Network has learned of the passing of Thomas Arvle Cashatt, who passed Dec. 21, 2009 at Graybrier Nursing and Retirement Center in Trinity, NC. Mr. Cashatt is the son of the late James Madison and Louetta Pierce Cashatt. Below is the death notice for Mr. Cashatt. The databases have been updated to reflect this passing.

This section is a permanent part of this site. The Briles Information Network has decided to participate in a DNA project on Family Tree DNA. The BIN will join the Germanna Colonies of Virginia and Broyles/Briles group already established on the site. We will also start our own group on the site. This segment is a simple guide to DNA and Genealogy research. I will make this very simple and painless! Genealogical DNA tests generally involve comparing the results of living individuals to historic populations.
The Basics
We humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, including a pair of sex chromosomes, known as "X" and "Y". Genealogists want to trace the paternal lineage (father) via the male because the Y-chromosome is passed unchanged from father-to-son (Y-DNA Test). Females don't take this test because the Y-chromosome is not passed to the ladies. Both Parents pass X-chromosomes to their daughters; a Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA Test) is used to trace maternal (mother) lineage.
Testing will:
- Determine if two people are related
- Determine if two people descend from the same ancestor
- Find out if you are related to others with the same surname
- Provide clues about your ethnic origin
Testing Wont Reveal
Genealogy DNA testing will not reveal any genetic disorders or foretell disease. It will not define the exact degree of kinship; meaning it will not spell out who your ancestor is by name. This test will not create a family tree for you or establish a direct lineage. Y-DNA and basic mtDNA test used by genealogists is NOT a paternity or forensic/crime test and it does not reveal any health/medical information.
What is Tested & Cost?
Genealogical DNA test involves taking a painless cheek-scraping (also known as a buccal swab) at home and mailing the sample to a genetic genealogy laboratory for testing. The BIN will be using Family Tree DNA for testing and storing of the results. All males with the Briles Surname or from the Germanna Colonies of Virginia will be using the 37-marker test. Cost for a Y-DNA 37 marker is between $120-$149. Privacy issue regarding testing can be found here.

The Briles Information Network has learned of the passing of Jack Woodrow McCollum who passed Dec. 13, 2009 in Asheboro. Mr. McCollum is the son of the late Arthur McCollum and Ira Jane Harrell McCollum and his lineage, via marriage, is the Crotts line. Below is the death notice for Mr. McCollum. The Briles Information Network has completed a major update to the databases to include the death index. There have been several deaths within the last two weeks to include Irene Adeline Keys who passed late November. Mrs. Keys was married to the late Lester Briles. The BIN has also determined where Ella M. Briles belongs on the family tree. The BIN had a death certificate back from 1917 and determined she was the daughter of Noah and Harriet Garrison McBride Briles. There has been a slight delay in the completion of the BIN Podcast. Although not the normal procedure for posting death notices, The BIN would like to reflect on the passing of music icon, Eric Woolfson who died December 2, 2009 in Berlin, Germany. Woolfson died of cancer at the age of 64.
Eric Woolfson was the co-founder of the Alan Parsons Project, known for the hits "Sirius", "Eye in the Sky", "Don't Answer Me", and many other hits.
Eric Woolfson and the Alan Parsons Project was the first group I played in the early 1980's at WRNC Radio in Reidsville. I have every song the "Project" has ever produced and along with ELO, are my favorite band!
Eric's music will live forever in our world and God has a true talent singing in heaven tonight. Eric Woolfson is survived by his wife and their two daughters.

Bonnie Snider Jones, contributor to the BIN, submitted several updates for the databases as well. The updates reflect not only the databases, but also the death index sheet which is available free of charge.
The BIN would like to announce a new documentary coming early next year. The BIN will be producing a documentary on Pierce Chapel Baptist Church in the Jackson Creek Community of Randolph County. The BIN will release a trailer soon regarding this special short film on the famous cemetery. The first ever BIN PODCAST will debut sometime in December, which will highlight the past year. Wake and Funeral service is scheduled for 3:00 pm Thursday, October 15 at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel; Rev. Hugh Biggers officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Tabor Memorial Chapel Cemetery in the Jackson Creek Community with military graveside rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Born September 17, 1917 in Randolph County to the late John William Briles, Sr. and Lena Hargrave Briles of Jackson Creek. Preceded in death by his wife Myrtle Fitzgerald who passed in 1992 (m.December 24, 1951). He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey Briles and Gilbert Briles and four sisters, Emily Briles, Edith Nance, Betty Hulin and Esther Yates. Survived by his daughter, Bonnie Briles Henry of the home, son George Briles of High Point, step-daughter Gail S. Beck and husband Bill of Thomasville, step-grandson, Eric Beck and wife Teri of Thomasville and step-granddaughter, Stephanie. Gerald "Jerry" Alvy Briles, 77, of Brush died Saturday at his home in Brush. Briles was born Aug. 29, 1932, in Lincoln, Neb., to Howard and Hazel Briles. He grew up in Nebraska, where he joined the Army and fought in Korea. Briles lived in Loveland where he raised his daughters. He moved to Brush at the age of 76 to enjoy the rest of his days. He is survived by his daughters, Amanda Nichole Briles and Lacy Kay Briles, both of Brush; one son, Nathan Thomas Saksek of Brush; his stepson, Jason Leon Kopenheffer of Wellington; his sister, Phyllis Michaels of Lincoln, Neb.; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday at the Round Mountain in Loveland. Friends who wish may make memorial donations in Briles' name care of the Heer & Dahl Mortuary, 222 Cameron St., Brush, CO 80723. The Heer & Dahl Mortuaries are in charge of the arrangements.

The BIN has received an obituary from Kelly O'Keefe, who responded via the BIN Blogger, regarding the lineage of Dr. James Briles. Dr. Briles' wife, Kathleen Steely Briles, was murdered on August 3, 2009 in Florida. We have checked the death notice and are confident in the lineage, which will be posted to the databases today. Dr. Briles is the son of the late Iowa Senator, James Edward and Marilyn Lorene Tendall Briles. We appreciate Kelly for the death notice. The murder case is still under investigation. There are no suspects at this time.
Tosha Medlin Briles, wife of R. Trent Briles (Curator of the BIN) recently interviewed for a story in the Thomasville Times Newspaper in Thomasville, NC. Coincidentally her brother Derek Medlin was also interviewed for the same story. The article focused on working on Labor Day, specifically public service jobs. The North Carolina Vital Records Unit has increased it's fee for research and making copies of records in the State of North Carolina. The new prices went into effect August 24, 2009 and will consist of the following:
Fee for a first copy of a vital record, or for conducting a search of the files for the record when no copy is made: $24
Fee for each additional copy requested from the same search: $15.
The new forms are available on the NC Vitals Site and remember Vital records are also available from the Register of Deeds in the county where the event took place. I would suggest you request a copy of an uncertified copy from the Register of Deeds(unless you need a certified copy), because the fee is nominal for uncertified copies of vital records. Murder in Florida; Dr. Briles' Wife Slain
UPDATE: MANATEE, FL-It appears blunt force trauma killed Kathleen Briles, wife of Palmetto Dr. James Briles, Manatee Sheriff Brad Steube said today at a news conference. Sheriff Steube declined say what was used to kill Briles, but said detectives did recover the murder weapon. Steube said the doctor has been cleared as a suspect in the case by confirmed alibis. DATELINE FLORIDA-The Briles Information Network has received word of a murder in Manatee, Florida. Kathleen Briles, wife of prominent Dr. James Briles, was found slain sometime Monday, August 3rd in the couple's home. Florida police have confirmed that Mrs. Briles died a violent death and the case is under investigation. You can follow this breaking story here.

BIO:Dr. Briles was born in Corning, Iowa. He attended Northwest Missouri State University from 1970-1971. He then transferred to Grinnell College in Grinnell. Iowa, where he earned his bachelor's degree in psychology in 1975. He received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1980. Dr. Briles completed his internship and residency at Mercy/St. Luke's Hospital from 1980-1983. The Genealogical Society of Davidson County will host a major genealogical Swap Meet on Saturday, September 19, 2009 from 10am to 3pm. Currently, Societies from Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, and Randolph Counties have committed to participate as well as Lexington Library's History Room. JoAnn Briles-Klein contacted the BIN in reference to Senator Briles and provided information regarding her lineage and that of Senator Briles. The late Senator is the son of the late Harrison & Susan Hall Briles. He was elected to the Kansas State Senate in 1940 and was a newspaper publisher in Stafford, Kansas. Senator Briles was married to Ada Cole and both are buried at Stafford Cemetery, in Stafford, Kansas. JoAnn Briles-Klein is the daughter of the late John Franklin Briles and Josephine Van Scoyk and resides in Kansas. Max Briles, brother to John Franklin Briles, was a avid genealogist. After you download or find a reader, come back to the BIN and look for this RSS logo
You can click on it or right click on it to retrieve the address of the feed. Simply put the RSS address into your reader and that's it! You now will receive updates for the BIN without having to visit the site. Example: Let say you visit ten genealogy sites a week and enjoy reading the content of those sites. The Briles Information Network has completed a major update to all of the databases, to include the death index. The database has now reached over 12, 000 names with over 4,600 marriages indexed. The update centered on Briles' in Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois. After reviewing several death certificates and census slides, we corrected several lineages around the 1870-1900 period for the Midwest area. We also added more lineages for the Kindley and McCain family to include the shooting death of Stephen Paul McCain. The research continues so stay tuned for more updates later in the year! The Death Index is a vital part of the BIN. This spreadsheet contains family members who have passed and the BIN has verified their death personally. This index has now reached over 1418 names! The BIN verifies deaths by four different ways: Death Certificates, obituaries, photos of gravesite, or verification from a genealogist. This databases lists the name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, parents and spouse's name, location of the body, and what method the death was verified. Well the Tooth Fairy has been busy around the Briles house lately. Cameron Briles has lost yet another tooth, this time a top one! Cami was excited this morning when she discovered the tooth missing. Cameron Briles, age 5, is the daughter of Rodney Trent and Tosha Medlin Briles. Cameron will celebrate the loss of the tooth by heading to the beach for summer vacation!
What a great Father's Day our family had this past Sunday! Trent, Tosha, and Cami Briles visited Faith Baptist Church in Trinity with Paul Dickie Medlin and Shirley Hill. My parents Jim and Cathy Briles visited the Briles gravesite at Guilford Memorial Park in Jamestown, NC. Rex Briles , my grandfather, is buried there along with his parents Ernest and Cora Cain Briles and his brother Ralph Briles. They also went to Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, NC to visit the grave site of Carvey and Ivy Black Garrett, my grandparents. We then traveled down to High Rock Lake in Southmont to visit my parents, Jim and Cathy Briles who returned from visiting both cemeteries. The BIn hopes everyone had a great Father's Day!
The Briles Information Network has completed an update regarding the passing of Mildred Beck. We also added the lineage for the following Surnames: William Henry Briles, Loder, Thompson, Harper, and Luella Briles Harper. This update also includes the passing of Mark Allan Thompson and his mother, Kathy Harper Thompson. Death notices for them are posted on the databases and will be added to the message board shortly. The BIN also found an old obituary for William Henry Briles who passed in 1946. This notice has been verified and the information updated on the database. The BIN databases now has over 12,000 names!
The 2009 Rail Days was held today at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. The annual event featured old rail cars, train rides, flight simulators, and other activities and a good time was had by all. The BIN entourage included Zachary Flowe, the tour guide and train enthusiast, Cameron Briles, Dickie Medlin, and Trent & Tosha Medlin Briles. The N.C. How long does it take for a blue bird to move into a brand new birdhouse? Well, not long and here is the proof! Jim and Cathy Briles decided to hoist their new birdhouse now instead of waiting until next year. Low and behold a little blue bird has taken claim to the property. Jim and Cathy live on High Rock Lake in Southmont and enjoy the area immensely. Kudos to Jim for capturing this photo of the little bird!

Well he did it! Michael Trent Briles has graduated from High School! Michael finished up his four years at Northwest High School in Guilford County and walked across the stage tonight at the graduation ceremonies. The ceremony took place at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center in Greensboro and was attended by Mike's family. Michael will work during the summer before attending UNCC in the fall. Coach Jill Briles-Hinton, University of Florida's Golf coach, has resigned from the program. Briles-Hinton has been coach of the Lady Gators since 1998 and played 12 years on the LPGA. The announcement came after the Lady Gators posted a 16th place finish in the NCAA East regional. The Gators advanced to the NCAA championships six times during her tenure, which included sixth-place finishes in 2002 and 2006. The Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year in women's golf in 2008 cited wanting to spend more time with her family as the main reason for leaving the Gator program. The BIN does not have Jill's family lineage at this time, but we believe her lineage starts in Peoria, Illinois. The BIN wishes nothing but the best for Jill and her family!
Cameron Briles scored big today at the 1st Annual Briles Fishing Tournament at High Rock Lake in Southmont! Cameron caught ten fish including this monster, which sealed the title for her. Cami is the daughter of Rodney Trent and Tosha Medlin Briles and turned five years old in February. Cami has been fishing for years and turned pro last year at the Myrtle Beach, SC. Cami won the prize of her choice, which was strawberry ice cream; provided by her grandmother, Catherine Briles. Cami has decided to forgo the touring circuit choosing instead to stay home and play with her three dogs and pig named Pebbles. Way to Go Cameron, we love you!

Although not the normal procedure for posting death notices, The BIN would like to reflect on the passing of an icon, Paul Harvey who died Saturday, February 28, 2009 at the age of 90.
Paul Harvey was the most listened-to broadcaster in America having an audience of over 22 million people. His career began in 1933, which last well over 76 years. I was blessed with the sounds of Paul Harvey back in 1981 when I was radio broadcaster for WRNC in Reidsville, NC. His famous news casts each day and the nail-biting "The Rest of the Story" segments were the trademark of Harvey. Every broadcaster I crossed paths with wanted to emulate Paul Harvey who seemed to captivate his audiences with folksiness and disjointed style of presenting the world events.
Paul Harvey's legacy has already had a profound affect on me as a former broadcaster and the curator of this web site and as a Producer/Director for Video Impressions. Our little angel Cameron Jewel Briles turned five years old two weeks ago. Cameron celebrated her birthday at Christo's Pizza Parlor in Lexington and all had a good time.
Cami is the daughter of Rodney "Trent" and Tosha MEDLIN Briles, curators of this web site. Cameron will be attending kindergarten in the fall, however she is not looking forward to the change. Attending the party were both sets of grandparents, Uncle Derek and Aunt TC Medlin, her cousin Chase and his parents Bruce and Betty Draughn and Shirley Hill. The Briles Information Network has received word of the passing of Clyde Thomas Williams who passed on Sunday, February 8, 2009 in Durham, NC. Mr. Williams was born to late June Henry and Golda (Peters) Williams and brother-n-law to the late Roy Holder who was married to Jewel Towe Holder. Jewel Holder is the grandmother of Tosha Medlin Briles.
Funeral services was held today in Siler City, NC which was attended by Derek Medlin and Phyllis Holder Medlin. The Briles Information Network has solved one issue involving Thomas E. Briles who passed in 2007 in California. Thomas is the son of the late Edmund John and Ruth Briles.This issue was solved using the 1920 census (Chester Harrison Briles). Based on the dates and the SSI Index, we feel confident with this assignment.
The other issues involve Lucy Milder Briles and her daughter Betty Briles Sheckell. Sam Broyles has the information on his web site and again we feel confident with this assignment. The problem was Lucy's death notice had her listed as Lucy Milder Briles. Her correct name is Lucy Mildred Briles and was married to her second cousin, once removed, Charles Edward Briles. Lucy's daughter, Betty passed in 2007 as did Lucy.

A yearly check of the High Point Enterprise web site has revealed a change in direction for the newspaper. When the change took place is anyone's guess, but it's for the better. You can now view obituaries and other articles, for free, with online registration. The registration is free and takes only a few minutes to complete. The format is very basic and the display is average at best, but it's free so we won't complain. The BIN has boycotted the Enterprise for the last three years when the paper started charging for online access. With this change, we will use HPE along with the rest of the sources in the area. Welcome Back HPE!

The Briles Information Network has updated the Crotts lineage, specifically for the Davidson County, NC. Crotts. Dan River contacted the BIN and requested we check Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church Cemetery for Crotts. We decided to update the lineage of Joh Jacob Crotts and Alfred L. Crotts, which expanded the database to include several Crotts in the county. Most of the Crotts are buried at Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ in Davidson County and the BIN has obtained the majority of the photographs for those buried at the cemetery. Thanks again to Dan River for the email and the information regarding this important update.
Jill Miller has contacted the Briles Information Network regarding the lineage of Carrie, who was married to Jacob Briles. Jacob is the son of John and Mary Jane Michael Briles and passed away in 1922 in Missouri. He first married Mary Tallman, then Carrie Leona Miller in 1915. Jill provided the BIN with two death certificates and a page from the family bible and we are confident, at least for this assignment, that the information provided is a true account of the lineage. Jill is still working on additional information and we appreciate her sharing this very imfportant discovery with the BIN.

The Briles Information Network is pleased to announce the first ever Pod and Video Cast! The BIN has partnered with Itunes, Blip.tv, and Gcast to provide a video and audio pod cast of this site. The video cast will mirror features and death notices on this site, but in a broadcast/newscast format. 
The audio portion of the video cast will be extracted and placed on Gcast to provide the pod cast version while the newscast will be housed on Blip.tv. Itunes will be the feature RSS reader/receiver however you will be able to view either cast on the above networks. You will be able to subscribe to broadcast using either of the above services, which will automatically download the episode to your favorite player.

The video cast will officially begin in early 2009 and will update on a quarterly basis. At this time, there are several videos already produced by Video Impressions and the BIN located on the Vidcast. The databases are where the GEDCOM's and main family information is housed. You can view the Briles Surnames/Databases in a variety of formats. The BIN uses the PAF Software or Personal Ancestral File to create a GEDCOM file. The GEDCOM file is then converted to an html file so it can be placed on the Internet. The BIN has adopted the policy of restricting information in regards to living family members. Only names will be displayed in the databases below. It does not cost anything to view the files and the BIN never charges for access to the databases and you don't need to download anything!
Death Index
The Death Index is a vital part of the BIN. This spreadsheet contains family members who have passed and the BIN has verified their death personally. The BIN verifies deaths by four different ways: Death Certificates, obituaries, photos of gravesite, or verification from a genealogist. This databases lists the name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, parents and spouse's name, location of the body, and what method the death was verified. You can access the death index by clicking on the research link above.

You can always contact us by posting on the BIN BLOG . Most of our news features and obituary information is either posted on the BLOG or message board and you never have to register to post on them. We check these daily so please feel free to post away!
Another way to contact us to either use our message board or to check our online status. The BIN uses several message boards to include our own message board located here on the BIN. The BIN also uses Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live Messenger for research help and general questions regarding this site.
